What if you stay the same?

Heather Maio • Jul 09, 2022

I think a lot about fear.

Some of it is my work. Walking into the gym is scary. Starting a new fitness routine can feel daunting. Creating new, healthier habits often feels intimidating when we start considering all the things we will need to change, give up, and walk away from.

I hold space for those fears; I know what it is like to walk into the gym for the first time. I am no stranger to the sense of overwhelm felt when starting out creating any life change.

In some ways, hitting rock bottom is a good place to be. Feeling pushed into a corner like we cannot stand our mediocracy and bullshit for one more day is a powerful place to start.

I don’t want to say it is only up from there; that would be a lie, it usually isn’t. Taking a few steps forward only to fall a few steps back is part of the process for everyone.

That is not trying to shit on anyone’s journey, but it is important to be realistic. The beautiful thing with those fallbacks is the opportunity to learn they provide. We are only moving forward if we learn from our past mistakes. Failures do not exist when we are able to use them for what they are – feedback.

Rock bottom is powerful because it allows us to put our fear into perspective. From a place of being so completely fed up with our shit, we can consider what will happen if we stay the same - if we continue with our detrimental, damaging, harmful habits.

Considering those questions, the ones that being comfortable in our complacency and bullshit trick us into not asking – is fucking terrifying.

Where we go wrong with fear when it comes to making changes that will help us elevate our health, wellness and life is forgetting to consider what would happen if we stayed the same.

What would your life look like if you decided to keep doing exactly what you are doing, making zero changes and continuing on your way?

A year from now, what would your life FEEL like if you kept your current habits, behaviors, and beliefs?

If you were to make zero changes to how you treated and interacted with your physical being, would you be happy with where you were? Would you feel proud of the person you had become?

That dream you have – the goal you have been carrying around inside you are scared to move on because what if: What if the process is challenging (spoiler alert, it will be, but that is where the magic happens). What if you don’t know what to do? What if you fail?

(what if I fall? Oh my darling, but WHAT IF you fly…)

What if you never start. Never try. Never explore what would happen if you allowed yourself to be slightly uncomfortable in the name of your growth?

How would that feel, knowing you let your fear stand in the way of your dreams? Is that a legacy you are comfortable leaving? She had excellent ideas but what too scared to chase any of them….

Consider those questions – they will put your fear of starting in perspective because, yes, change is scary, but sometimes staying the same is what is truly terrifying.
